All About Antique Staddle Stones

Antique staddle stones (sometimes referred to as mushroom stones) have been a garden decor staple since the 1920s, and when you see their charming appearance, it’s not hard to see why.

Staddle stones were originally used across the UK in the 1700s - 1800s to raise grain stores and larders up off the ground, to protect the contents from vermin and potential water damage.

They were carved from local stone by stonemasons or farm labourers, making each staddle stone completely unique.

Antique Staddle Stone - West Yorkshire Architectural Antiques

Where abouts in the country a staddle originates from will determine the type of stone that was used, and some stonemasons crafted their staddles with more cylindrical bases, whereas others are more rectangular or even triangular.

Today, staddle stones that you find available to buy will be intended purely for decorative purposes.

The mushroom-like shape makes for a lovely addition to any garden, with staddle stones fitting particularly well in lush, green gardens. And the time-worn, uneven surfaces mean that moss and lichen are often found growing on antique staddle stones, giving them a natural, rustic appearance that helps them blend in seamlessly with a country garden.

The head of a staddle stone is also often separate to the base, making it easier to move around the garden when you’re trying to find the perfect spot.
